Alter physical roadside signs before enforcing emergency speed limit changes

Petition request

That the House of Representatives urge the Government to amend the National Fuel Response Plan to prohibit the enforcement of emergency open road speed limits unless physical or digital roadside signage is altered to match the legal limit.

Why this petition

Under Phase 4 of the Fuel Response Plan, the government can drop open road limits to 80km/h while leaving 100km/h signs standing to cut costs. NZ Police and NZTA warned this mismatch will cause mass driver confusion. I believe that enforcing a speed limit that directly contradicts official roadside infrastructure violates natural justice and creates an unfair legal trap for citizens. I believe that any nationwide change to driver liability must maintain transparent, honest signage.

The government changed the speed limit on my street overnight. No signage, no warning, just a new limit and a camera. That's not road safety — that's a tax on people who didn't know the rules changed.

The signs exist. People just don't read them. Adding more physical signs won't fix inattention — it'll just cost ratepayers more money for something that already exists.

I got fined for doing 52 in a 50 zone. The sign was hidden behind a tree. If the government wants to enforce a limit, they need to make sure people can actually see it. That's not rocket science.
