Bring responsibility for local government elections to the Electoral Commission

That the House of Representatives pass legislation bringing responsibility for local government elections under the Electoral Commission.

Councils run their own elections, mostly via one of two private providers. Private providers are not subject to the Official Information Act or Ombudsman oversight, so it can be unclear how they take decisions, exercise statutory powers, or decide whether to pass concerns to police. The Justice Committee, the future for local government review, LGNZ, and Transparency International NZ have urged considering reform. I believe this would address concerns about transparency, oversight and integrity.
