Ban rodeo in New Zealand

Petition request

That the House of Representatives urge the Government to ban all rodeo events in New Zealand.

Why this petition

I believe rodeos are events that exploit animals for entertainment. International research and New Zealand animal welfare organisations say that rodeos create unnecessary stress and suffering to the animals involved. In my opinion, the code of welfare for rodeos is also inadequate, due to the nature of rodeos being inherently stressful for the animals involved.

What is Rodeo?

Rodeo is a competitive sport involving livestock, such as cattle and horses. Events typically include "bull riding," where a rider attempts to stay on a bucking bull for eight seconds, and "steer roping," where a rider chases and ropes a steer. The petition seeks a complete ban on these events in New Zealand, arguing that the sport causes inherent harm to the animals.

Current Situation in New Zealand

Currently, rodeo is legal in New Zealand. It is regulated under the Animal Welfare Act 1999. The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (MPI) oversees animal welfare standards, including a specific Code of Welfare for rodeo animals. This code sets minimum standards for housing, handling, and transport but does not prohibit the sport itself. The petition exists because animal welfare advocates argue that the current regulations are insufficient to prevent suffering, as the core nature of the sport involves forcing animals into stressful situations for human entertainment.

Arguments in Favour of the Ban

  • Animal Suffering: Proponents argue that rodeo causes physical injury and severe psychological stress to animals. They contend that no amount of regulation can make an inherently violent sport "humane."
  • Inadequate Regulation: Critics of the current system state that the Code of Welfare is too lenient and fails to account for the cumulative stress on animals over a season.
  • International Trends: Supporters point out that several other countries and regions have already banned rodeo, suggesting New Zealand is lagging behind in animal welfare standards.

Arguments Against the Ban

  • Regulatory Sufficiency: Opponents argue that the existing Code of Welfare, enforced by MPI, is robust enough to ensure animal safety. They claim that incidents of serious injury are rare and that the code is regularly reviewed and updated.
  • Freedom of Choice: Some argue that banning the sport infringes on the rights of participants and spectators to engage in legal entertainment and cultural activities.
  • Economic Impact: Rodeo events contribute to rural tourism and local economies in certain regions. A ban could negatively impact farmers, event organizers, and local businesses that rely on these gatherings.

Relevant Context

The debate is part of a broader national conversation about animal welfare. While New Zealand has strong general animal protection laws, specific sports like rodeo remain contentious. The petition asks the House of Representatives to urge the Government to act, which would require a change in legislation or a significant tightening of the Code of Welfare. The affected parties include rodeo riders, livestock owners, event promoters, and animal welfare groups such as the SPCA and the New Zealand Animal Welfare Trust.

Buck chutes and the prods exist to force an animal to panic for a crowd. Calling that a sport is a marketing decision, not a factual one, and other countries have banned it without their towns collapsing.
