Do not introduce a compulsory written external assessment for Visual Arts

That the House of Representatives urge the Government to withdraw the proposed compulsory 25% written external examination requirement for Visual Arts and retain externally assessed practice-based visual assessment.

We think: academic rigour is demonstrated through what students know and can do, not solely what they write; Visual Arts practice-based assessment provides direct evidence of sustained inquiry, critical thinking, technical skill & creative decision-making; a compulsory written examination risks assessing literacy rather than artistic achievement, reduces practical learning time and creates inequitable barriers; assessment must remain valid, culturally responsive and authentic to the discipline.
