Build an East Auckland Hospital

Petition request

That the House of Representatives appropriate funding and direct development of an East Auckland Hospital at 292 and 260 Botany Road and immediately purchase 280 Botany Road for land-banking to support future extensions.

Why this petition

East Auckland is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing urban areas and represents Auckland’s largest local board population. I believe that East Auckland needs its own hospital, which would incorporate Botany Road’s birthing unit and dental clinic, rather than relying on Middlemore, which is struggling. In my view, East Aucklanders need better access to hospital-level care in emergencies. I believe that as taxpayers, East Aucklanders have a right to better hospital access.

What the Topic Is

This petition asks the New Zealand Government to build a new hospital in East Auckland. It specifically requests funding for a facility at 292 and 260 Botany Road, plus the immediate purchase of land at 280 Botany Road. "Land-banking" means buying land now to secure space for future growth, preventing it from being sold to private developers. The proposal suggests moving the existing Botany Road birthing unit and dental clinic into this new hospital.

Current Situation

East Auckland is one of the fastest-growing areas in New Zealand. Currently, residents rely heavily on Middlemore Hospital in South Auckland for major medical care. Middlemore has faced significant strain in recent years due to high patient volumes, long waiting times, and staffing shortages. The petition argues that the distance and travel time to Middlemore are problematic for emergencies, particularly for the large population in the East Auckland Local Board area.

Arguments in Favour

  • Proximity and Access: A local hospital would reduce travel time for emergencies, which is critical for conditions like heart attacks or strokes.
  • Relieving Pressure: Diverting non-critical and routine cases to East Auckland would ease the burden on Middlemore Hospital.
  • Population Growth: As East Auckland’s population increases, current hospital capacity is insufficient to meet demand.
  • Consolidation: Combining the birthing unit and dental clinic into a larger facility could improve efficiency and patient flow.

Arguments Against

  • Cost: Building a new hospital is extremely expensive. Critics argue these funds might be better spent on upgrading existing facilities or increasing staff numbers at Middlemore.
  • Staffing Shortages: New Zealand faces a nationwide shortage of doctors and nurses. A new hospital may struggle to attract enough qualified staff, potentially draining resources from other areas.
  • Land Use: Purchasing specific private land at Botany Road may be controversial if it displaces existing businesses or residents, or if the site is not considered the most optimal location for a major hospital.
  • Efficiency: Some argue that a smaller, specialized facility might be more cost-effective than a full-scale hospital, or that the current system can be improved without new construction.

Relevant Context

The Ministry of Health (Te Whatu Ora) is responsible for planning hospital infrastructure. Recent government reviews have highlighted the need for better regional health planning in Auckland. The East Auckland Local Board represents the largest population in Auckland, making healthcare access a significant local political issue. Any new hospital would require significant parliamentary funding and a long-term construction timeline.

Community arguments

👎 Against Wiremu Paki 19 Oct 2026
Health resources should go where the need is greatest. East Auckland has real growth pressures, but that does not mean it should automatically jump ahead of other underserved communities.
👎 Against Sinead Harrington 19 Oct 2026
A hospital is more than a building. We need to know how patients will get there, how ambulances will cope and whether the site can support the required services.
👍 For Tessa Whitfield 18 Oct 2026
The Government should purchase the adjoining land now. Land banking is far cheaper than trying to expand later, and the population growth is not going to stop.
👎 Against Malachi Reid 17 Oct 2026
Duplicating services across Auckland risks spreading specialist staff too thinly. Regional planning should come before a decision to build a new hospital in one area.
👍 For Amelia Frost 17 Oct 2026
Families in East Auckland face long trips for maternity, emergency and specialist care. A local hospital would make care more accessible, especially for older people and those without reliable transport.
👎 Against Harper Ngata 16 Oct 2026
The petition asserts need but does not provide clinical data or population projections. Decisions about hospital capacity should be based on evidence, not local campaigning.
👍 For Luka Singh 16 Oct 2026
Middlemore is under enormous pressure. East Auckland taxpayers deserve a hospital that serves their own rapidly growing community, not an endless reliance on an already stretched facility.
👎 Against Iona Clarke 15 Oct 2026
The money could achieve more by upgrading Middlemore and improving ambulance and public transport links. A new building is not automatically the best use of scarce health funding.
👍 For Eden Grant 14 Oct 2026
The Botany Road site already has a birthing unit and dental clinic. Building on that base would be more efficient than starting from scratch and would give the community a proper health hub.
👎 Against Gwen Lloyd 14 Oct 2026
New Zealand already has a severe health workforce shortage. Building another hospital will not help if there are not enough doctors, nurses and specialists to staff it.
👍 For Caleb Nielsen 13 Oct 2026
In an emergency, the drive to Middlemore can be the difference between timely care and a much worse outcome. East Auckland needs hospital-level services closer to home.
👎 Against Dara Patel 12 Oct 2026
A new hospital is a massive long-term cost. Before committing, we need a full business case showing bed numbers, staffing, transport links and how it fits the regional health plan.
👍 For Asher Mitchell 12 Oct 2026
East Auckland is one of the fastest-growing parts of the country, but residents still have to travel to Middlemore for hospital care. A local hospital is basic infrastructure for a population this size.
