Legalise ‘plug-and-play’ balcony solar for New Zealand households

Petition request

That the House of Representatives implement a regulatory framework to allow 'plug-and-play' balcony solar systems in New Zealand and align our electrical standards on such systems with those recently adopted in the United Kingdom and Europe.

Why this petition

I believe: New Zealanders are facing a cost-of-living crisis while the Crown collects nearly $1B annually in dividends and taxes from state-owned power companies; other countries have proven that 'plug-and-play' balcony solar is a safe, low-cost way for households to lower their bills; we should stop prioritising gentailer profits over energy independence, and update our standards to allow these systems to provide cost-of-living relief for renters and apartment dwellers.

👍 For Aria Thompson 22 Oct 2026
Parliament should remove unnecessary barriers and let households choose affordable solar.
👎 Against Amelia Frost 22 Oct 2026
There is no need to legalise uncertified systems. Existing rules can be adjusted without a broad change.
👍 For Daniel Rangi 22 Oct 2026
New Zealand should update its standards to match the UK and EU, with local safety checks.
👎 Against Sophie Anderson 22 Oct 2026
Fire and electrical safety risks are too important to leave to a voluntary standard.
👍 For Marcus Te Rangi 22 Oct 2026
Legalising certified balcony solar would support energy independence and cost-of-living relief.
👎 Against Harper Ngata 22 Oct 2026
The focus should be on insulation, heating and energy efficiency, which deliver more reliable savings.
👍 For Luka Singh 22 Oct 2026
A certification regime for plug-and-play units would protect safety while allowing innovation.
👎 Against Jaxon Baker 22 Oct 2026
Solar without storage can worsen peak demand. The grid still needs firm capacity.
👍 For Iona Clarke 22 Oct 2026
Households should be able to generate their own power instead of relying entirely on gentailers.
👎 Against Gwen Lloyd 22 Oct 2026
Small balcony panels will not make much difference to bills and may not be suitable for many homes.
👍 For Eden Grant 22 Oct 2026
Renters and apartment residents are locked out of rooftop solar. Balcony systems give them a practical alternative.
👎 Against Dara Patel 22 Oct 2026
New Zealand’s electrical regulations and grid are different. We should not copy overseas rules without a proper review.
👍 For Caleb Nielsen 22 Oct 2026
The UK and Europe have shown that certified plug-in systems can be safe. New Zealand should align with those standards.
👎 Against Asher Mitchell 22 Oct 2026
Electrical safety and grid stability must come first. Uncapped DIY solar could create serious risks.
👍 For Kiri N. 22 Oct 2026
Plug-and-play balcony solar is a low-cost way for renters and apartment dwellers to cut power bills. New Zealand should allow it.
